The 76ers are the most eye-catching project of the year. They added LeBron James, who's starting his 24th season, and Jaylen Brown alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe. That starting five has shared the floor only once in the preseason (October 8 in Brooklyn), and Embiid finished that game with eight turnovers. The market respects them: they share the same title odds as the Knicks (+900).

The line opened at -4.5 and is already at -5.5. The market has piled onto the Knicks because of the group's continuity and the emotional factor of the night. Still, 5.5 points is a lot of cushion against a team with this much individual talent, even if the chemistry isn't there yet. The risk for Philadelphia is the lack of reps together and the minutes management of its veterans.

It's a clash between the two title favorites, both at +270. Last year they played each other as many as 12 times across the regular season, the NBA Cup and the playoffs. San Antonio won the Cup semifinal by two points and the Western Conference Finals 4-3. OKC finished 64-18 and San Antonio 62-20. It's also a showdown between Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the reigning two-time MVP, and Victor Wembanyama, the betting favorite for MVP this season.

The Thunder lost depth: Lu Dort, Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins left over the summer. The Spurs added Tobias Harris, but he's questionable for the opener with a calf strain (official report due before 5 p.m. CT on October 19). De'Aaron Fox missed the start of the preseason with hip soreness, and Carter Bryant sprained his ankle.
