Asian Handicap Explained: Quarter Lines, Half Wins & Pushes
How -0.25, -0.5, -0.75 and -1.0 soccer handicaps settle, including half-won and half-lost outcomes.
The 30-second answer
An Asian handicap gives one soccer team a virtual head start (or deficit) so the match becomes a near 50/50 bet — and it removes the draw. Whole lines (−1.0) can push, half lines (−0.5) always settle, and quarter lines (−0.25, −0.75) split your stake across two neighbouring lines, creating half-won and half-lost results.
Whole-goal lines: 0, −1.0, −2.0
- Real Madrid −1.0: Madrid must win by 2+ to win the bet. Win by exactly 1 = push (stake refunded). Draw or loss = lose.
- Getafe +1.0: Getafe wins the bet if they win or draw. Lose by exactly 1 = push.
- 0 (draw no bet): pick the winner; a draw refunds the stake.
Half-goal lines: −0.5, −1.5, +0.5
No pushes are possible.
- Arsenal −0.5 = Arsenal to win (same as the moneyline without the draw).
- Brentford +0.5 = Brentford to win or draw (double chance in disguise).
- Bayern −1.5 = Bayern to win by 2 or more.
Quarter lines: −0.25, −0.75, +0.25, +0.75
Your stake is split 50/50 across the two nearest lines.
Liverpool −0.75 = half on −0.5 and half on −1.0.
- Liverpool wins by 2+: both halves win → full win.
- Liverpool wins by exactly 1: −0.5 wins, −1.0 pushes → half win (you profit on half the stake, the other half is refunded).
- Draw or loss: both halves lose → full loss.
Inter +0.25 = half on 0 and half on +0.5.
- Inter wins: full win.
- Draw: 0 pushes, +0.5 wins → half win.
- Inter loses: full loss.
Napoli −0.25 = half on 0 and half on −0.5.
- Napoli wins: full win.
- Draw: 0 pushes, −0.5 loses → half loss (you lose half the stake).
- Napoli loses: full loss.
Why bettors use Asian handicaps
- Lower margin. Two-way markets from Asian books often run 2–3% vig versus 5–7% on three-way 1X2 lines.
- Draw protection. You are never wiped out by a 0–0 you didn't fancy.
- Precision. A −0.75 line lets you express "strong favourite but a one-goal win is plausible" better than any moneyline.
Recording half results in your bankroll
Because quarter lines create half outcomes, a tracker that only knows "won" or "lost" will mis-state your ROI. The Saint Picks bankroll tracker supports half won and half lost settlements so a −0.75 that lands by one goal is credited exactly right.
Asian totals
The same logic applies to goals. Over 2.25 = half on over 2.0 and half on over 2.5; exactly two goals is a half loss, three or more is a full win. Under 2.75 wins fully on 0–2 goals, half-wins on exactly 3, and loses on 4+.
Frequently asked questions
What does -0.75 mean in Asian handicap?
Half your stake is on -0.5 and half on -1.0. A one-goal win is a half win, a two-goal win is a full win, a draw or loss is a full loss.
What is a half win in betting?
A quarter-line outcome where one half of the stake wins and the other half is refunded. You profit on half the bet.
Is Asian handicap better than 1X2?
It usually carries a lower margin and removes the draw, so many experienced soccer bettors prefer it. It does not change the underlying probability of the match.
What happens on a draw with a 0 handicap?
The bet pushes and your stake is refunded. This is also called draw no bet.
