Real Betis vs FC Barcelona: First Meets Third in Seville

When: Saturday, October 17 — Estadio de La Cartuja, Seville (12:30 PM ET)

Competition: La Liga, Matchday 9

The game of the weekend in Spain. League leaders Barcelona — perfect through eight matches — travel to Seville for their toughest domestic test yet against a Real Betis side enjoying the best start to a La Liga campaign in club history. First against third, separated by five points, with both teams also flying in the Champions League. The winner takes a massive statement into the rest of the season.

Tale of the tape

Barcelona's history-making start

Eight games, eight wins, 34 goals scored. Hansi Flick's Barcelona are producing one of the great starts to a La Liga season, and the midweek 4-1 Champions League win away at Galatasaray showed the machine is humming in Europe too. Recent league form includes a 7-2 demolition of Racing Santander, 3-0 at Getafe and 3-1 over Sevilla.

The big news is the return of captain Raphinha after two games out with a minor muscle issue, plus Frenkie de Jong cleared after his World Cup knee injury. With Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Gabriel Jesus and Anthony Gordon all in the squad, Flick's attacking options are frightening. Andreas Christensen and Roony Bardghji miss out injured.

Betis: the best version of themselves

Manuel Pellegrini's side have never started a La Liga season like this: six wins and 19 points from eight games, sitting third. They have also won both Champions League matches in thrilling fashion — including the 3-2 victory over Porto — and thrashed Osasuna 5-2 at La Cartuja last weekend.

Isco remains the creative heartbeat, flanked by Abde Ezzalzouli, Antony and Cucho Hernández. Four different players share the club's league scoring lead with two goals each — no single star, but a genuinely collective attack. Júnior Firpo and Aitor Ruibal are doubts.

The goals history

This fixture rarely disappoints. The last 11 meetings have produced 49 goals — roughly one every 20 minutes — with Barcelona winning eight. Last season brought a 3-1 Barça win on matchday 37 and a 5-1 Copa del Rey rout, but the December 2025 league meeting finished 3-5 to Barcelona in a classic. Betis have not beaten the Catalans since December 2024, and La Cartuja will be rocking.

What to watch

  • Raphinha's return: The captain's intensity sets Barcelona's press. How sharp is he after two games out?
  • Isco vs Barcelona's midfield: If the veteran finds pockets between the lines, Betis can hurt anyone.
  • Betis's home fortress: Unbeaten in their last three at La Cartuja, including that 5-2 over Osasuna.
  • The five-game stretch: This is the first of Barcelona's three biggest tests — how they handle Seville says a lot about the title race.
