Quick overview

Soccer has more betting markets than almost any other sport. This guide explains the most common ones, how they usually settle, and where the exact rules depend on your sportsbook or its statistics provider. Always read your book's house rules before betting — there is no single universal rulebook. For live selections, see our soccer picks.

Regular time: the rule behind most markets

Unless a market says otherwise, most soccer bets settle on regular time only: 90 minutes plus stoppage (added) time. Extra time and penalty shootouts are normally excluded. Markets such as "To Qualify", "To Lift the Trophy" or "Method of Victory" explicitly include them. If a market's wording is unclear, check the book's rules.

1X2 (match result)

Three outcomes: 1 = home win, X = draw, 2 = away win, settled on regular time. A cup tie that is 1-1 after 90 minutes settles as X even if one team wins on penalties.

Double chance

Covers two of the three 1X2 outcomes in one bet:

  • 1X — home win or draw.
  • X2 — away win or draw.
  • 12 — either team wins (no draw).

The price is shorter than either single outcome because you win more often. Related: Draw No Bet refunds your stake on a draw.

Handicaps

A handicap gives one team a virtual head start to balance the match.

  • European (3-way) handicap — whole numbers with a draw option, e.g. Home -1: a 2-1 home win is a "handicap draw".
  • Asian handicap — removes the draw. Half lines (-0.5, -1.5) always produce a winner; whole lines (-1.0) can push; quarter lines (-0.25, -0.75) split your stake and can half-win or half-lose. Full detail in our Asian handicap guide.

Goals: over/under, 3.0 vs 3.5 vs "3+"

Total goals markets count goals by both teams in regular time. The line format decides whether a push is possible:

  • Over 3.5 — needs 4 or more goals. Three goals loses. No push is possible.
  • Over 3.0 (Asian total) — 4+ goals wins, exactly 3 goals is a push (stake refunded), 2 or fewer loses.
  • "3+ goals" — a yes/no market that wins with 3 or more goals. This is the same outcome as Over 2.5, not Over 3.5.
  • Over 2.75 (quarter line) — splits stake between 2.5 and 3.0: exactly 3 goals is a half win.

Own goals normally count toward totals. Goals in extra time and shootouts normally do not.

Both Teams To Score (BTTS)

Yes wins if each team scores at least one goal in regular time; No wins if at least one team fails to score. A 0-0 or 2-0 settles as No; a 1-1 or 3-2 settles as Yes. Own goals count for the team credited with the goal.

Team totals

Over/under on one team's goals only, e.g. "Arsenal Over 1.5". The same 3.0/3.5/3+ logic applies. Useful when you have a view on one attack without caring about the opponent.

Halves

Most markets also exist for the 1st half and 2nd half only: half result, half goals, half BTTS, half handicaps. The 2nd half normally counts only goals scored after half-time, with stoppage time of that half included. Half-Time/Full-Time is a separate market that needs both the half-time and full-time result correct.

Corners

Corner markets include total corners, team corners, corner handicaps and "race to X corners". Settlement usually counts corners actually taken; a corner awarded but not taken (for example because the half ends) typically does not count. Some books settle on their data provider's count, so small differences between sites can occur.

Cards and booking points

  • Total cards — often a yellow counts 1 and a red counts 1, but rules vary.
  • Booking points — a common scheme is yellow = 10, red = 25, with a maximum per player (often 35 for a second-yellow red). This is a convention, not a universal rule.
  • Cards shown to managers, coaches or substitutes on the bench, and cards after the final whistle, are excluded by many books. Check your book's definition.

Team and player shots

Shot markets exist for teams ("Team Total Shots Over 12.5") and players ("Player 1+ Shots on Target").

Total shots vs shots on target (SOT)

  • Total shots — every attempt at goal: on target, off target (wide or over) and, at many providers, blocked shots.
  • Shots on target (SOT) — attempts that would go into the net without a save or a goal-line block, plus goals. A shot that hits the post or crossbar and stays out is usually not on target. Blocked shots are not on target.

Because data providers (for example Opta or Sportradar) apply their own definitions, a borderline effort can be counted differently. Your sportsbook settles on the source it names in its rules.

Player participation

For most player props, the player must start or come on as a substitute. If he does not play at all, the bet is usually void. Some books void only if the player doesn't start, others keep bets live once he enters. Rules differ — check before betting.

Frequently asked questions

Do soccer bets include extra time and penalties?

Most markets such as 1X2, totals and BTTS settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time only. Markets like To Qualify or To Win the Trophy include extra time and penalties. Always check your sportsbook's rules.

What is the difference between over 3.5, over 3.0 and 3+ goals?

Over 3.5 needs four or more goals. Over 3.0 wins with four or more, refunds your stake on exactly three and loses with two or fewer. 3+ goals wins with three or more goals — the same outcome as Over 2.5.

What counts as a shot on target?

An attempt that would have gone in without a save or goal-line block, plus goals. Shots hitting the woodwork and blocked shots are usually not on target. Books settle on their named data provider.

What happens to a player prop if the player doesn't play?

At most sportsbooks the bet is void if the player takes no part in the match. Exact participation rules vary by book.
